First Light is a quiet, ongoing study of the moment when night releases its grip and form begins to reappear.
Photographed at dawn, these images explore atmosphere, color, and subtle shifts in light rather than place. Horizon lines dissolve, details soften, and familiar landscapes become abstract fields of tone and emotion. The work is less about documenting a location and more about responding to a fleeting state, the calm, suspended moment before the day asserts itself.
After decades working in highly structured commercial environments, this series allows space for intuition and restraint. The photographs are made slowly, often returning to the same locations, letting repetition refine perception. What emerges is a meditation on stillness, transition, and the quiet power of first light.
Printed as traditional chromogenic (C-print) photographs, these works are exposed and chemically developed on light-sensitive photographic paper rather than inkjet printed. This process produces smooth tonal transitions, rich color depth, and a luminous surface quality ideally suited to images driven by light and atmosphere.
Print size refers to the printed image. We allow a 2” white border for framing options.
